American Wine Society - a group dedicated to wine appreciation and education

Join us for informal monthly gatherings with a presentation on the topic of the month.  Visitors or new members will feel at home because we always cover the basics for anyone unsure of wine tasting techniques.  Even the most knowledgeable wine lovers will admit that there is always something new to experience.  Each meeting offers a great deal of discussion on wine-related topics.  Often there are members of the audience with experiences to share about the country of origin or the particular styles of wine being covered in the presentation.

Wine appreciation is the goal and our meetings are an enjoyable way to learn new and exciting aspects of wine.  We taste wine at each event so you must be 21 years or older to participate.
Meetings are held at Belle Mount Vineyards, near Warsaw, Virginia.

January 4 Susan Vecchione -  Traditional Sailing Wines

Sailors often had to carry their own provisions—especially water. During the voyage their drinking water became contaminated.  The use of alcoholic beverages in the water helped to extend the shelf life by controlling the growth of unwanted organisms.  The composition of these beverages varied and reflected the availability of crops grown near the ports.  We will focus on three types of traditional wines, rice wine, resinated wine, and fortified wines.  So if you’ve always wanted to know what Malmsey and Madeira really are—come join us for Traditional Sailing Wines!
