Susan Vecchione - Traditional Sailing Wines
Sailors often had to carry their own provisions—especially
water. During the voyage their drinking water became contaminated.
The use of alcoholic beverages in the water helped to extend the shelf life
by controlling the growth of unwanted organisms. The composition of
these beverages varied and reflected the availability of crops grown near
the ports. We will focus on three types of traditional wines, rice
wine, resinated wine, and fortified wines. So if you’ve always wanted
to know what Malmsey and Madeira really are—come join us for Traditional Sailing
Wines!
